Zolmitriptan is a migraine medication belonging to the Triptans class. It works as a 5-HT1b and 5-HT1d  receptor agonist in the blood vessels. This induces the release of serotonin from the brain, which reduces inflammation and constricts blood vessels.

Zolmitriptan can help reduce the effects and pain when migraines occur. It acts on 5HT receptors in the brain that increase the secretion of serotonin, a hormone that can help reduce inflammation. It also blocks pain signals from being relayed to the brain.

However, it does not prevent migraines from occurring. It is primarily used to treat acute migraine or cluster headaches. It is not intended for the treatment of hemiplegic, Retinal, or Basilar type migraines.

How do I take Zolmitriptan?

Take one tablet at the onset of an attack. If little to no effect is apparent after an hour, another dose can be taken. Do not exceed the daily dose of 10 mg.

Adverse Effects

• Tightness of the chest
• Palpitations, hot flushes, muscle ache/weakness, tingling feelings

A rare but serious problem called Serotonin Syndrome can occur with the use of Zolmitriptan, especially in conjunction with certain medications such as SSRIs. Seek medical attention if the following occurs:

• Changes in Heartbeat, palpitations
• Fever, sweating, Delirium, and confusion
• Seizures, convulsions, muscle twitching or agitation
