Imigran
Imigran is a migraine treatment which contains sumatriptan – a selective serotonin receptor agonist which stimulates the serotonin receptors in the brain to reduce the symptoms of migraines.
You must be diagnosed with Migraines by your GP before purchasing from our doctors.
What causes migraines?
Effectively treating migraines is difficult because the exact cause of migraines remains a mystery. A variety of triggers and different physiological processes could be at work when a migraine occurs.
At this stage of the research, medical professionals suspect migraines could be the result of abnormal brain activity surrounding the nerves and blood vessels, which can cause severe pain and other symptoms.
How does Imigran work?
The active ingredient in Imigran is Sumatriptan Succinate.
Imigran belongs to a class of medications referred to as 5HT1-receptor agonists, which are also often known as triptans. These drugs are defined by their ability to stimulate serotonin receptors in the brain.
Evidence suggests that activating the serotonin receptors in the brain can alleviate symptoms of migraines and provide relief for some patients. It is believed that the widening of blood vessels in the brain causes the pain of a migraine. Triptans restrict these blood vessels to relieve the pain while also treating the accompanying nausea.
Imigran cannot prevent a migraine from occurring but can treat the symptoms of a migraine once one is underway.
Does Imigran have other uses?
Imigran is also commonly prescribed to treat cluster headaches, which differ from migraines in that they are defined by severe pain that is isolated to one side of the head. If you experience frequent migraines, cluster headaches, or both, you may also want to talk to your doctor about preventive treatments.
FAQS
How long does Imigran take to work?
If you are experiencing the early signs of a migraine or are in the middle of a full attack, you want immediate relief. Imigran is relatively fast-acting, and many people experience significant pain relief in just one hour.
While results vary from patient to patient, up to 35% of users experienced significant relief within one hour, and about half of the patients reported noticeable relief from symptoms within two hours of taking the medication. Finally, 28% to 33% of patients experience complete relief within two hours of ingesting Imigran.
Which dosage is right for me?
Finding the right dosage to effectively treat your symptoms may involve some trial and error. Typically, doctors start patients on a lower dosage and monitor for positive results and side effects.
Some patients respond well to the lower dosage, while others may need to titrate their medication by taking a 100 mg tablet and deciding whether any possible side effects are worth the relief. Please inform our Doctors, who will assist in finding the right dosage for
I have never taken Imigran before
A complete examination must have been conducted by your Doctor/Consultant, and you must have been diagnosed with Migraines before our Doctors can prescribe for you. This is because migraines share common symptoms with other conditions and can often be caused by underlying issues. Taking Triptans without a proper diagnosis can be dangerous.
Do I need to take Imigran with food?
Imigran can be taken with a glass of water as soon as migraine symptoms develop. If you experience nausea, you may want to eat only simple foods when on the medication, but you can take Imigran on an empty stomach. If you do not experience relief within two hours, take another dose. Keep in mind that you should not exceed 200 mg in a 24-hour period.
What side effects should I be aware of?
- Chest pain or tightness
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- Drooling
- Feeling hot or cold
- Mild headache
If you experience these side effects, consult your doctor. However, if you experience more severe and less common side effects — tingling sensations, convulsions, loss of coordination, and body pains — you may be having an allergic reaction and should immediately contact a medical professional.
Is Imigran safe during pregnancy?
While some preliminary studies have been conducted on the effects of Imigran on animals, tests on humans have yielded inconclusive results.
Ultimately, the data from these studies show no significant side effects; however, doctors typically advise women who are pregnant or breastfeeding to exercise caution when taking Imigran.
Does Imigran interact with other medications?
Be sure to tell our prescriber about any medications or supplements you are currently taking. In addition, report any instances of allergic reactions you have had in the past. This will help prevent any negative interactions and make sure you get the most out of your medication.
Is Imigran suitable for everyone?
In addition, if you have other medical conditions — such as heart problems, high blood pressure, kidney or liver disease or seizures — Sumatriptan may not be the right choice to treat your migraines. Take the time to inform our prescriber of any previous or existing medical conditions that may affect your treatment.
What Do I Need to Know about Dosages?
Imigran is taken as needed, so there is no need to worry about missed doses. However, patients should avoid taking more than 200 mg in a 24-hour period. Common symptoms of an overdose include:
- Shaking
- Red skin
- Breathing trouble
- Weakness and convulsions
If you have taken too much Imigran or are experiencing symptoms you suspect may indicate an overdose, immediately seek medical attention.
Can Imigran be taken with paracetamol?
Imigran can be taken with other painkillers, including aspirin, paracetamol, and other NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen.
Always consult your doctor to ensure the medication you are taking is suitable for you.
How often can you take Imigran?
Do not take more than two Imigran tablets a day.
If the first tablet does not relieve migraine symptoms, wait 2 hours before taking Imigran.
