What is Erythromycin?

Erythromycin is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of infections, including:

  • pneumonia
  • skin infections like rosacea, acne
  • dental infections
  • chlamydia

In the treatment of chlamydia, it is used in cases whereย Doxycyclineย orย Azithromycinย cannot be given.

How does Erythromycin work?

Erythromycin prevents the bacteria that cause chlamydia, known as Chlamydia trachomatis, from growing.

It achieves this by inhibiting the production of an enzyme that the bacteria use for growth and multiplication. Over time, the amount of bacteria diminishes as the body’s natural defences destroy them.

How to take Erythromycin?

Always take this medication as prescribed.

Erythromycin is taken every 6, 8 or 12 hours daily with or without food. This means you can take erythromycin four times a day, three times a day or twice a day.

You should not compensate for a missed dose by taking an extra dose of the medication.

When taking antibiotics, it is important to complete the prescribed course, even if you feel better. If you do not complete the course as prescribed, the infection could return or become resistant to the antibiotic, making future treatment of infections much harder.
