How Does Jardiance Work?
Jardiance contains empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.
It enables the kidneys to excrete excess glucose through the urine, thereby reducing the blood glucose level. Jardiance may also help prevent heart disease.
How Do I Take Jardiance?
Jardiance is a tablet that should be taken once a day.
Swallow Jardiance tablets whole with a glass of water.
Jardiance tablets can be taken with or without food.
Do not crush or chew Jardiance tablets.
While the exact time you take it doesn’t matter, it should be taken at the same time each day.
What should I do if I forget to take Jardiance when I should?
If you forget to take your daily dose of Jardiance, and it is more than 12 hours until your next dose, take your missed tablet. Take your next one at your usual time.
If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, do not take the missed tablet. Take your next tablet at the usual time.
Never take two tablets to make up for a missed dose.
What should I do if I take too much Jardiance?
If you take too much Jardiance, consult your doctor immediately. Alternatively, call the NHS helpline on 111.
Side effects and cautions

Side effects of Jardiance may include:
- Dehydration
- Genital yeast infection (Thrush)
- Low blood sugar
- Passing more urine
- Raised, red, lumpy rash (hives)
- Thirst
- Urinary tract infections (UTI)

Allergic reaction
Do not take Jardiance if you are allergic to empagliflozin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
If you experience an allergic reaction to Jardiance, stop taking the tablets and go straight to your nearest accident and emergency department. Remember to take the packaging leaflet and any remaining medicine with you, so that doctors treating you know exactly what you took.
Signs of an allergic reaction include:
- Chest tightening
- Dry, red and cracked skin
- Itchy, red, watery eyes
- Raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, eyes or face
- Tummy pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
- Wheezing
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not take Jardiance if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
If you become pregnant while taking Jardiance, speak to your doctor for further advice.
Do not take Jardiance while breastfeeding.

- Reduces body temperature
- Slowed heartbeat

- Vomiting
Do not take Jardiance past the expiry date printed on the packaging.
Do not throw away unused medicine in the water waste. Take any unwanted or expired medicine to your pharmacy for safe disposal.
Always keep medicine out of sight and reach from children and pets.
Never share a medicine that has been prescribed to you with anybody else, even if they have been diagnosed with the same condition or are experiencing the same symptoms as you.
